A Taste of Lake Garda Through Wine + Cheese

A Taste of Lake Garda Through Wine + Cheese

THE PERFECT PAIRING FROM NORTHERN ITALY

Have you ever been craving a rich wine and cheese pairing deep in history, distinctive origin and ecompasses finely-honed production techniques. Yes? Travel with me through food and wine to the breezy shores of Italy’s largest lake, Lake Garda and the mountain-framed valleys of Belluno province, Piave DOP for a slice of cheese and wine heaven!

Founded in 1996, The Garda DOC is the largest inter-regional DOC shared between Lombardia and Veneto and has been newly added to Italy’s sparkling wine category producing sparkling wines that are refreshing and bright. While the Lake needs no introduction as its beauty speaks for itself, the lovely sparkling wines of the region may and must be experienced.

Garda DOC sparkling wine must be based on varieties of Garganega, Pinot Grigio and/or Trebbiano and Chardonnay. On the flip side, Garda DOC sparkling rosés must be based on Corvina, Rondinella, Pinot Nero and Merlot. These are made in either traditional method (bottle-fermented) or Charmat (tank-fermented) and range in sweetness from Brut Nature to Demi-Sec.  The distinctive styles of these wines are elegant with beautiful bouquets that bring you to the shorelines of the Italian Riviera.

Heading to the Northern tip of the Veneto region, the distinctive Piave DOP cheese calls the breathtaking Dolomite mountains and valleys of the Belluno province home. It’s a hard, cow’s milk cheese with rich flavors that intensifies with age.

A sip and a bite together is pure magic.

“Valtènesi Rosé wines are described as a “one-night wine” because the vinification of the grapes takes place with the contact of the must on the skins for just one night.” Consorzio Valtenesi

Another must from the region are their vibrant rosés exemplifying the Italian Riviera of Northern Italy. Valtènesi Rosé is made from the grape Groppello, a group of varieties that is widely planted in Lake Garda producing bright rosatos with subtle yet prevalent juicy cherry and strawberry and sprinkles of spice. They are delicate and elegant with fine fundamental characteristics.  It’s versatile enough to pair with rich cheeses, meat dishes and/or a roasted vegetable medley.
